In review... Thanks to the great support of Centre County residents, business and non-profit organizations, the many challenges of the 2007 Centre County Toys for Tots campaign were met. For the first time, due to the unprecedented needs of the community for food assistance, food items were also requested of those attending the wrapping sessions as well as at workplaces throughout the county. In addition, weather played an issue as schools were closed during one of the wrapping days and the final clean-up was moved up a day due to another projected major storm. As a recap, the following milestones were met: (1) 1778 needy children identified by the seven county food banks and the PA State Police with their Foster Child Program received four toys per child; (2) An additional 839 children were provided four toys per child between the food banks cut-off date and December 22nd at the “last minute needs” site after comparing the names from the food bank lists. This was also the first year that there was a sufficient amount of food donations that food was able to be provided to all in need, along with toys at this site; (3) The remaining items were dispersed among 16 Centre County social service agencies to help with their program needs and were used by approximately 3150 children; (4) Nearly 250 businesses and groups supported our countywide effort for 2007; (5) There was more than 200 drop-off points around the county; (6) Approximately 700 people came out to help wrap and label the toys over four wrapping sessions. 13,000 toys were collected, sorted, wrapped, labeled, re-sorted, bagged, and transported to the distribution points. Businesses, churches, youth groups, scout troops, campus groups and departments, fire companies, Penn State Navy ROTC, and the Marines and their families of the Nittany Leathernecks all worked in concert to provide some "hope" to children in our community who might have lost "hope" if not for this community effort. I am proud of this community and what it can accomplish for the less-fortunate in our midst. Thank you again for your support and we look forward to having your assistance in 2008. Semper Fi, Gene Weller, Chairman, Centre County Toys for Tots Program |

Public News Release 2007-02 26 August 2007 The Nittany Leathernecks are pleased to announce that the president of The Pennsylvania State University, Dr. Graham Spanier, will be Honorary Chairperson for the 2007 Centre County Toys for Tots campaign effort. Through the years Penn State has provided the critical support necessary to help make the program the success it has become. Public News Release 2007-01 25 August 2007 The Nittany Leathernecks Detachment of the Marine Corps League hosted a private dinner in honor of Sergeant David Emery, USMC. A trust, established in his name, was announced at the dinner. In recognition and appreciation of his bravery and personal sacrifice, citizens, associations and businesses throughout Centre County (and beyond) have made generous contributions to a trust fund that has been established for Sergeant Emery. Emery was critically wounded earlier this year while serving his country in Iraq. A native of Bellefonte, Sergeant Emery will be returning to his hometown following extensive rehabilitation efforts at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. With the donated funds received, the Marine Corps League's Nittany Leathernecks (an incorporated non-profit veteran community service organization) established a legal trust fund that will provide financial assistance to Emery and his family during his challenging transition back into the civilian community. Anticipated financial demands include immediate needs such as health, comfort, and maintenance. Within the trust, a 529 education plan has been established for the education of his infant daughter and any future children. An oversight board consisting of Marine Corps League members, professional legal, financial and accounting services, will administer the trust. President Calvin Coolidge once noted that "The Nation which forgets its defenders will itself be forgotten." On behalf of Sergeant David Emery, the Nittany Leathernecks wish to express their sincere gratitude for the outstanding generosity received from both within Centre County, as well as from across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and throughout the United States. We are thankful for the support of Americans who have honored the courage and sacrifice of David Emery, Sergeant of Marines. Sergeant Emery continues to face significant challenges in his recovery process. The Nittany Leathernecks encourage continued support of the trust fund. Friends of Sergeant Emery can send check or money order donations made out to Nittany Leathernecks (memo: Sgt Emery Fund). Send donations to: Nittany Leathernecks Detachment Attn: Sgt. Emery Fund PO Box 956 Lemont, PA 16851-0956 The Nittany Leathernecks are an incorporated 501 4(c) organization. All contributions are tax deductible. For more information, contact Martin Kaschalk at 814-383-2718 or Glenn Moyer at 814-383-4721. The detachment wishes to thank the following generous donors.
