Each summer the Nittany Leathernecks Detachment participates in the Pennsylvania Special Olympics, which is held on the campus of The Pennsylvania State University. Under the tutelage of our committee chair, Colonel Gerry Russell, and his esteemed project leader, Marine Robert Johnson, the detachment provides the horsepower necessary to officiate the field events held at the outdoor track on the campus of Penn State. An average of 15 volunteer members conduct the events over a three-day period (usually Thursday, Friday and Saturday). The event has proven rewarding to both participants and detachment volunteers alike.
