Summary: After
recruit training at Paris Island, was assigned to Ordnance School
in Quantico, VA. There he became a specialist as a small arms
armorer and aviation ordnance. He was assigned to VMF-112 in
San Diego on August 12, 1942. He sailed from San Diego to Noumea,
New Caledonia October 28, 1942. He flew to Henderson Field,
Guadalcanal on November 3. There served as an armorer
to Paul Fontana and the VMF-112. He remained on Guadalcanal
in combat action until January 2, 1943. He also served in Espiritu
Santo. Stricken with malaria he was returned to New Caledonia
to recover in a hospital. Soon after, he was returned to the
states where he refused a medical discharge. He was then sent
to recruiting school in Philadelphia and was promoted to recruiting
Sergeant. He served as a Marine recruiter in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania
for the remainder of the war. He was discharged on February
4, 1946.
Alfred had four brothers who served, one each, in the Army,
Air Corps, Navy, and Coast Guard. Together the Chickilly brothers
represented five branches of the military during World War II.
Following military service, Alfred attended Temple University
on the G.I. Bill. He worked as a Supervisor on the Pennsylvania
Turnpike and retired in 1972. He owned and operated a Christmas
tree farm and business until his death. Alfred died suddenly
and unexpectedly of an apparent heart attack on April 15, 1999.
